Advancement & Alumni

Welcome to the Bishop Shanahan Advancement & Alumni Website.  Please take a moment and familiarize yourself with the tabs and the information contained in each.  The Advancement Office  works to "Advance the Mission of Bishop Shanahan High School"  through philanthropy, programming and events.  As many know, all tuition goes to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia for teachers' salaries and benefits.  BIshop Shanahan relies on the Annual Fund (renamed the Shanahan Fund this year in honor of our 50th Anniversary), student fees and fundraisers to fund the Shanahan campus.  Help us secure the funds needed to continue excellence in education here at BSHS.

Our goal this year for the Shanahan Fund is $250,000.   This fund has grown significantly over the past 5 years (from $54,500 in '02-'03 to $196,303 in '06-'07).   Many thanks to the parents, grandparents, alumni (both BSHS and St. Agnes) who have made these numbers grow!  The support and generosity of all constituencies is greatly appreciated.  You are remembered daily in our prayers!
As of Wednesday, May 14, 2008, our Shanahan Fund has reached $143,744 with 651donors.....
please don't delay and donate ASAP to help us reach our goal!  If you have already given, thank you!
If your circumstances permit—a second gift would be greatly appreciated
May 30th.....One month to go.....to date $157,830 with 730 donors.....you can help us reach our goal!

Please feel free to contact anyone in the Advancement Office if you have any questions.

 The Terence Driscoll Keane Scholarship

On Friday, November 9th, Terry Keane passed away at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital.  Terry was a forty year member of the Bishop Shanahan faculty and a distinguished member of the English Department.  Terry’s wife Dushanka ’68, and daughters Kate ’96 and Mary ’98 were graduates of Shanahan.

Terry was a highly respected member of the Shanahan Faculty.  He has left an indelible impression on the BSHS Community.  We who worked with him admired his patience, his kindness, his expertise, and his humor.  We were touched by his goodness and charity, his love for his family and his dedication to his vocation as a teacher.  Terry certainly made a difference in the lives of many of his students, he was a great mentor and guide to all of us.  He began teaching at Shanahan in 1965.  The subjects he taught included French, Humanities, and English.  He was Activities Coordinator, and also moderator for Shanaviews, The Great Books and the Asian Club.

One former student wrote, “I hope that Mr. Keane knows he made quite an impact on all the students that came into his classroom.  I remember him fondly and although he always came across very serious, every once in a while he’d let a little dry humor slip through and you would see not only the “teacher”, but the man that he was.” Many graduates from the 60’s through the 00’s have written condolences, fond memories, and sadness at his passing.   Another graduate stated “It was nice to be able to put into words how much he meant to me as a teacher, a mentor, and a friend.  He is the main reason I became an English teacher and though I have since left the profession to pursue other goals I will always thank him for his guidance.  He was truly a gentleman and a scholar, a mentor and a friend who left his mark upon many of our hearts.”

He will be missed.

The Keane family has established a scholarship in Terry’s name; The Terence Driscoll Keane Scholarship.  This scholarship will provide tuition assistance to students who desire a Catholic Education at Bishop Shanahan High School.  If anyone wishes to donate, make checks out to Bishop Shanahan.  Your donation will be recorded and your name sent to the Keane family.  Please keep the Keane family in your prayers!

A New Tax-Saving Opportunity!
If you are 70 ½ or older, recent legislation benefits YOU!  Receive the benefits-before  time runs out.  It took nearly a decade, but Congress has finally enacted legislation as part of the Pension Protection Act of 2006 (PPA 2006), which offers charitably minded individuals a golden opportunity to make gifts from their IRAs and exclude the amount of their gifts from gross income.    To qualify:· The donor must be 70 ½ years of age or older;· The transfers must go directly from the IRA to qualified charities (Bishop Shanahan!);· Gifts cannot exceed $100,000 per taxpayer per year; and Gifts must be outright.**Transfers to donor advised funds, supporting organizations, and charitable remainder trusts and for charitable gift annuities do not qualify.Your gift can be accomplished easily and allow you to maximize the benefit of your IRA dollars.  By directing the mandatory withdrawal to Bishop Shanahan, taxpayers do not have to report the amount as income, and they avoid additional tax on Social Security benefits.  This opportunity is available only until the end of 2007, and can support the Bishop  Shanahan Fund!
