Mr. Nicholas Ireland
Why did you become a teacher?
My passion for social studies and my understanding of the importance of good teachers led me to pursue a career in education. When I was in grade school, I had an amazing teacher who showed me the positive impact that teachers can have on their students. During my time at Shanahan as a student, I had number of great teachers who helped inspire me to consider becoming an educator. As a secondary level social studies teacher, my goal is to make students more aware of the world around them and empower them to go out into that world and have a positive impact.
Where did you go to school?
I graduated from Bishop Shanahan in 2003 and later earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Kutztown University and a Master of Education from Cabrini University.
What ways do you incorporate real-world experience into your classroom?
Social Studies lends itself to connecting curriculum content to the real world. I connect historical topics with current events to add relevance for students whenever possible. In government classes, we connect concepts of political science directly to historical topics and government in practice at the present.
What do you like most about teaching at BSHS?
There is so much to like about teaching at Shanahan. We have elite facilities and resources; robust alumni support; an excellent administration, staff, and faculty; supportive families; and great students. I love that Shanahan has and continues to put a high emphasis on faith, academics, extracurricular opportunities, and service to help form well rounded graduates.
Why would you recommend BSHS to a prospective student?
Students at Shanahan have a plethora of opportunities to develop academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. There are so many choices available to students in terms of electives, clubs/activities, travel opportunities, and hands on learning experiences. These options enrich the high school experience and help students find and develop new interests and skills. The culture and environment of the school is second to none. I can say firsthand that Shanahan prepares students for their transition into adulthood in an excellent manner.
What do you enjoy doing while not in school and/or grading papers?
Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my wife and our three young children, coaching rugby here at Shanahan, going to concerts and sporting events, and traveling.
What awards and accolades have you received during your teaching career?
I received the ETS Recognition of Excellence Award: Praxis II Social Studies Content Knowledge.
What else would you like to share about yourself?
I have coached the rugby team since 2016 after playing rugby at Shanahan and in college. I coached the rugby team during two state conference championships in 2018 and 2019.
