Mrs. Janet Moore
Why did you become a teacher?
I always liked math. In high school I tutored math both at a local elementary school and through the National Honor Society at my high school, but it was really in college that I developed a greater appreciation for my education and actually learned how to learn. I was a civil engineering major, with a psychology minor. While I enjoyed engineering, I wanted a career that had more interaction with others and that was more rewarding. I really loved my high school experience; I had great math teachers in high school who both supported us and challenged us, so I went back to school for my Masters in Education.
Where did you go for college?
I went to the University of Pennsylvania for my undergraduate degree, and then earned my teaching certification and Masters Degree from Immaculata University.
In what ways do you incorporate real-world experience into the classroom?
I allow students to do exploration for some topics so they can discover how and why the concepts apply, rather than simply memorizing a list of rules. I also like to incorporate hands-on activities and projects so the students can see how the concepts apply outside of the classroom. We try in every chapter to make a connection to solving problems in other disciplines such as science or in the business world. My classes also visit the STEM Lab a few times each year to work collaboratively.
What do you like most about teaching at BSHS?
The students, teachers, and administration at BSHS are what has kept me here for 20 years, but especially the students. I love how the students are always ready to work. So many say "thank you" every day before they leave class. Students are also comfortable and willing to ask for help after school when they need it. The students really are the best part of teaching.
Why would you recommend BSHS to a prospective student?
Bishop Shanahan is a faith-based community that has something for everyone in all areas of academics, spirituality, and student life. There are course electives and clubs for students with all interests.
What do you enjoy while not in school and/or grading papers?
When not in school, I enjoy spending time with my family and traveling. We spend most of our summers traveling for sports, and we are trying to visit all 50 states when not at a baseball or softball field.
What awards and accolades have you received during your teaching career?
I am the Mathematics Department Chair and a STEM Certified Teacher by the National Institute for STEM Education.
