National Merit Scholars

National Merit Scholarship Program

At Bishop Shanahan High School, we are honored to have many students named as National Merit Scholars each and every year! National Merit Scholars are selected based on their excellent PSAT scores out of 1.5 million high school juniors from around the country. 50,000 participants receive recognition as Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program annually. Only 16,000 students are selected to be national Semi-finalists. Some 15,000 are named as national Finalists.
 
The mission of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) is to recognize and honor the academically talented students of the ​United States. NMSC accomplishes its mission by conducting nationwide academic scholarship programs.

Class of 2024

The principal, Dr. Robert Moran, of Bishop Shanahan High School announced on September 20, 2023 that Dean Carangan, Colm Grant, Renee Jonsson, and Nolan Kyle have been named Commended Students in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program. Congratulations to these students on this prestigious accomplishment! 

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2024 competition by taking the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Bishop Shanahan High School students Michael Dougherty, Matthew Howe, Jocelyn Howell, and Brendan Scott have been named as 2023 National Merit Scholarship Commended Students. William Kolimago was named as a finalist. This distinguished honor celebrates students’ outstanding academic promise and excellence on the PSAT/NMSQT test.

At Bishop Shanahan High School, we are honored to share that 9 students from the Class of 2022 have been named as Recognized National Merit students! This is the largest number out of all the Archdiocese of Philadelphia High Schools. National Merit Scholars are selected based on their excellent PSAT scores out of 1.5 million high school juniors from around the country. Congratulations to: Leah Baker, John Boncek, Grace Della Porta, Bridget Gauntner, Mary Grant, Emma McHugh, Gabriel Nichols, Jessica Ward, and Grace Watson.

​The Class of 2021 has had three students named as National Merit Commended Scholars: Katharine Aaronson, Hannah Fasco, and Joseph Manning! Congratulations to these students on all of their hard work and accomplishments! A special congratulations to Hannah Fasco who was additionally selected as a National Merit Finalist!

Class of 2020 National Merit Scholars

Class of 2020

​The Class of 2020 has had seven students recognized as National Merit Commended Scholars for the 2019-2020 academic year: Shannon Baker, Mia Bellafante, Lauren Bradley, Miriam Englehardt, Ryan McCarthy, Angelica Relacion, and Paul Ringenbach. We are proud of each and every one of these students! A special congratulations to Mia Bellafante who was additionally selected as a National Merit Finalist!
