Students working on a laptop together

Bishop Shanahan High School motivates young adults who are academically prepared, emotionally mature, and spiritually developed to meet the challenge of the future. To accomplish this, we provide academic resources that will support all of our students as they work towards success.

Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU)

Bishop Shanahan High School offers Academic Strategies, a course taught by Chester County Intermediate Unit math and reading specialists.  This course is designed to assist students with the requirements of their content classes and to promote development of independent learning strategies. The math specialist assists students who struggle to learn math concepts, while the reading specialist supports students who struggle with reading and writing. The instructors also provide review, reteaching and extra practice of difficult  concepts in all content areas.  School success strategies are emphasized including: goal setting, time management, assignment book completion, study strategies, organization skills and self-advocacy.

Academic Support

After School Academic Success Program

The After School Academic Success Program meets every Thursday after school in the Media Center. The program is designed to support students who struggle with submitting assignments on time. Students who are referred by a teacher receive a notification from the Academic Office
via email, informing them that they must attend a required After School Academic Success session where they will complete an assignment designated by the referring teacher. Members of the National Honor Society and a faculty moderator are present to assist students with the completion of the assignment.

Before / After School Faculty Support

BSHS faculty are always available to provide the support that BSHS students need to succeed. Students receive customized instruction at before and/or after school sessions with their teacher(s). Often this is done in small groups of students. Faculty support allows students to develop improved study habits and to gain a deeper understanding of course content. Sessions can be scheduled with individual faculty members on an as-needed basis, while other faculty have set dates and times.

Peer-to-Peer Tutoring

11th and 12th grade students who are members of the National Honor Society (NHS) provide a peer-to-peer tutoring program. NHS students who excel in a particular course are paired with a student's corresponding need, by that student's request. Tutoring sessions are held after school based on each student's availability. Guidance & Counseling

The Guidance program at Bishop Shanahan High School is concerned with the spiritual, educational, emotional, and social development of all students. A basic assumption of this program is that all individuals, from time to time, may require guidance assistance.

Regular Counseling Services
The guidance department offers the following services:

  • Academic and career/vocation counseling
  • Personal counseling
  • Support groups
  • Parental consultation
  • Referral to outside specialists when appropriate

Other Services
In addition to the regular counseling services available to the students, the Guidance Department also provides the services of a Student Assistance Program (S.A.P.). The S.A.P. Team seeks to identify students who may be at risk and provides those students and their families appropriate sources of assistance. Bishop Shanahan’s S.A.P. Team is an outgrowth of the state-wide Student Assistance Program, and works in cooperation with Rehab After Work and School of Exton. The S.A.P. Team includes faculty members, guidance counselors, and administration.
