Track and Field District 1 Championship Results – May 16-17

Eleven members of the Bishop Shanahan Track and Field Team competed in the District 1
Championship Meet held at Coatesville High School on May 16-17. Collectively, they broke two
school records and advanced two individuals to the State Championship Meet to be held at
Shippensburg University on May 23-24.

Steven Todd qualified for the State Finals with a 4th -place finish in the 3200 in a time of 9:19.
Payton Nolan was our other State qualifier with a 6th place finish in the 400. Her time of 57.58 in the preliminaries broke the 22-year old Shanahan record of 57.82 set by Meaghan Hobson.
The boys’ 4x100 relay team of Aidan Civitella, Greg Palaia, and Colin Cregan broke their own school record with a time of 41.97 seconds. Although it was the 7th fastest time out of 45 teams in the preliminaries, they did not make the finals (8 teams) because that honor goes to the 6 heat winners and the next two fastest times. They came in second in their heat and missed the finals by 0.02 seconds. None of our relay team members are seniors, so good things are in store for next year.

The girls 4x100 relay team of Payton Nolan, Madie Kruzek, Josephine Regan, and
Jacqueline Regan also ran well. Their time of 50.08 seconds was just 0.21 off the school
record and good for 22nd place out of 42 relay teams that qualified for Districts. As with the boys, all relay runners will be back next year. Colin Cregan narrowly missed the 100m finals, finishing 12th out of 68 competitors. His time of 10.98 into a slight headwind was just 0.08 seconds from making the finals. Colin followed that with a 25th -place finish out of 63 runners in the 200.

Other top finishes for the Shanahan squad were Steven Todd, who finished 10th in the 1600,
Jack Polizzi - 17th in the 400 with a season-best 50.20, Payton Nolan – 20th in the 200 and
Bella Ertle, 32nd in the discus.
