Allied Health & Teacher Academy

Allied Health Science Program

Bishop Shanahan High School partners with The Allied Health Science Program run through the Chester County Technical College High School. This prestigious program is a highly regarded option for those considering a career in the medical profession. Top seniors who enroll in this 7.5 hour per week college prep program split their time behind a desk, in the classroom, and on their feet in local health care facilities.

Students have three pathways to choose from: a Hospital, EMT or Sports Medicine track. Students will be offered placement location based upon availability and merit. Students who are not placed in their first-choice track may be offered a spot in their second or third choice track.

HOSPITAL PATHWAY

The hospital track is for those students who are primarily interested in getting a comprehensive overview of the medical field in a hospital setting. Students will complete clinical rotations across a wide variety of hospital departments. Career opportunities include: physician, surgeon, pharmacist, and registered nurse (RN), to name a few.

EMT PATHWAY

The EMT track is for those students who are primarily interested in pursuing a career in the emergency medical field or building a foundation of knowledge for allied health professions. Students will complete hands-on clinical rotations in the field with Good Fellowship Ambulance and EMS Training Institute (West Chester). Career opportunities include, but are not limited to: emergency medical technician (EMT), emergency room technician, emergency communications dispatcher, paramedic, paid-career firefighter, and basic life support (BLS) healthcare provider.

SPORTS MEDICINE PATHWAY

The sports medicine track is for those students who are interested in pursuing a career in the physical medicine and rehabilitation field. Students may complete clinical rotations in high school athletic training rooms and community rehabilitation facilities at Unionville High School.  Career opportunities can include: athletic trainer, physical therapist, nutritionist/dietitian, exercise physiologist, and physical therapist assistant.

Teacher Leadership Academy

Bishop Shanahan also partners with the Teacher Leadership Academy run through the Chester County Technical College High School. This highly regarded program gives seniors who are interested in pursuing a teaching career the opportunity to study practical theories regarding teaching and to intern at local schools with professional teachers. The Teacher Leadership Academy is an intensive training program designed to give students in-depth teaching experiences alongside professional teachers.


​Top high school seniors develop the skills to be 21st century teachers in the two-credit, college preparatory Teacher Leadership Academy program. The course consists of 7.5 hours/week divided between classroom instruction and internship experience with certified teachers at all grade levels, which results in approximately 147 hours of instruction and 112 hours of internship experience. Students are required to provide their own transportation and purchase college-level textbooks for this course.

Students who have completed the Teacher Leadership Academy have gone on to careers as a certified high school, middle school or elementary school teachers, math specialists, reading specialists, para-educators, school counselors, school psychologists, special education teachers, special education supervisors, school principals, and assistant principals.
